Exploring the Marvels of Mexico City: The Ultimate 7-Day Itinerary

Mexico City

Mexico City captivates with its vibrant culture, people, and flavors. From iconic landmarks to hip neighborhoods, every corner of this city tells a story.

In this post, I invite you to go on a journey with me as I unveil my thoughtfully crafted 7-day itinerary for Mexico City. Whether you’ve visited before or will be a first-timer, these tips and recommendations, born from my experiences over two visits, promise to provide the ideal foundation for planning your upcoming adventure.

day 1: LA Condesa & roma NORTE

arrival & transportation

Plan to arrive and depart from Aeropuerto Internacional Benito Juárez Ciudad de Mexico. I booked our round trip tickets using AAdvantage miles. Uber is the best option for getting to your hotel and around Mexico City. DiDi is also quite popular.

WHERE TO STAY

With so many eclectic neighborhoods to choose from, figuring out where to stay in Mexico City can be difficult. Here are two places I’ve stayed in along with one I found that I’d book on a future trip.

ANDAZ MEXICO CITY CONDESA
@andazmexicocity

Andaz Mexico City, new in 2023, is a contemporary boutique hotel located in one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Mexico City - La Condesa. Known for its bohemian atmosphere, tree-lined streets, and Art Deco architecture, La Condesa is characterized by its eclectic mix of hip cafes, stylish boutiques, and lively nightlife. For a touch of luxury within walking distance of the artistic charm of La Condesa, I highly recommend Andaz Mexico City. I booked our stay using Chase Sapphire Rewards points.

The St. Regis Mexico City
@stregismexicocity

St. Regis Mexico City epitomizes luxury in the heart of the bustling capital. This five-star hotel, along popular Paseo de la Reforma, boasts opulent accommodations with breathtaking views of the city. If you want to be near cultural landmarks and high-end shopping, St. Regis Mexico City is an excellent choice. I stayed here several years ago and we booked our stay using Starwood Preferred points, which today would be Marriott Bonvoy Rewards points.

OCTAVIA CASA
@octaviacasa.mx

Octavia Casa is a boutique property located in La Condesa that appears to be a calm sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I found it as I was researching places to stay in my latest visit to Mexico City, but I didn’t stay here. In a future trip though I’d definitely consider it and maybe you will too.

WALK AROUND LA CONDESA AND ROMA NORTE

Wherever you decide to stay, a good first day is spent exploring La Condesa and Roma Norte. Neighboring districts in Mexico City, they collectively form a dynamic duo of urban charm and cultural allure. In La Condesa, tree-lined streets lead to parks and cafes, creating a bohemian atmosphere against a backdrop of Art Deco architecture. Roma Norte is a thriving hub of creativity with contemporary galleries and trendy eateries. Spend at least a half day waking through these two neighborhoods.

DINE AT MI COMPA CHAVA IN ROMA NORTE
@micompachava

There’s no better way to start your immersion than with a stop for lunch or dinner at Mi Compa Chava to kick off your culinary journey of Mexico City. This authentic eatery serves a fusion of flavors that reflect the richness of Mexican cuisine with a contemporary twist.

DRINKS AT OLOLO
@OLOLO

As your first day draws to a close, consider indulging in a cocktail and light bites with speakeasy vibes at Ololo. On Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, you can enjoy one of their live vinyl sessions. Since it’s a quaint spot, I recommend making a reservation in advance on Open Table here.

day 2: COYOACÁN

Coyoacán, a historic district in Mexico City, has cobbled streets that lead to colorful colonial architecture. Once home to the iconic Frida Kahlo, Coyoacán preserves her artistic legacy with La Casa Azul (The Blue House) aka The Frida Kahlo Museum, which is a must see during your visit.

BREAKFAST AT MARATEA
@maratea_mx

Maratea, located in the heart of Coyoacán, is the perfect place to start your day. Its Mediterranean charm and secret garden make it a delightful spot to stop in for coffee and pastries or a light breakfast before you begin your tour of Coyoacán.

The Frida Kahlo Museum was once Frida Kahlo’s family home and later became the place where she lived with her husband Diego Rivera, created art, and found her inspiration. The museum showcases a captivating collection of Kahlo's paintings, personal belongings, and artifacts, offering an intimate glimpse into her remarkable life. Prior to visiting I re-watched the movie “Frida” which made the visit extra special.

Pies para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar
— Frida Kahlo, 1953

“WHY DO I WANT FEET if I have wings to fly?”

STROLL THROUGH THE COLORFUL STREETS OF COYOACÁN

Coyoacán is a hub of incredibly talented artists. From traditional Mexican artisans to contemporary visionaries, Coyoacán remains a melting pot of artistic diversity. At every turn, there’s color and beauty to appreciate.

I’m a huge fan of street art and supporting local artists, so I couldn’t leave Coyoacán without buying something to put on our walls. I usually have my street art framed at Framebridge. Please support artists @alexbauernm and @alextr_grafica by checking out their work and giving them a follow if you like what you see.

END YOUR DAY WITh CHURROs AT Churrería El Moro
@CHURRERIAELMORO

Churrería El Moro Coyoacán is known for its delicious churros and traditional hot chocolate. One of the unique aspects of Churrería El Moro is its commitment to preserving traditional recipes and methods. The establishment’s nostalgic ambiance makes it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.

Day 3: Centro Historico

Mexico City's Centro Histórico, or Historic Center, is the heart of the capital. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts a fascinating blend of colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and modern life.

PICK UP YOUR FAVORITE PASTRY AT PASTELERÍA IDEAL
@pasteleriaideal

For those seeking a taste of Mexican pastry perfection in the heart of Mexico City, Pastelería Ideal is a must-visit destination. This iconic establishment has been serving up freshly baked delights for decades. You can’t miss a quick stop in Pastelería Ideal as you begin your day in the Historic Center and plan to pick up a coffee somewhere else because it’s the one thing not on the menu.

VISIT PALACIO BELLAS ARTES
@palaciooficial

Palacio de Bellas Artes, or the Palace of Fine Arts, stands as an iconic cultural masterpiece in and of itself. Whether marveling at the architectural beauty, exploring the art collections, or attending a live performance, a visit to Palacio de Bellas Artes is a journey into the soul of Mexico's cultural richness.

LUNCH AT AZUL HISTÓRICO
@AZULRESTAURANTES

Azul Histórico is nestled within a beautifully restored 17th-century colonial building in the historic downtown area serving authentic Mexican cuisine that blends tradition with contemporary flair. The setting is enchanting, with its open-air courtyard adorned with lush greenery and ambient lighting. The food presentation is a ten out of ten with the tortilla soup stealing the show.

WALK AROUND ZÓCALO AND SEE AZTEC RUINS AT Templo Mayor

The Zócalo, also known as Plaza de la Constitución, is one of the largest city squares in the world. This historic and expansive public space is surrounded by some of the city's most iconic landmarks, creating a hub of cultural, social, and political significance.

Templo Mayor is an archaeological marvel that unveils the ancient splendors of the Aztec civilization. This historic site, discovered in 1978, offers visitors a glimpse into the once-great city of Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire. It's truly remarkable that in the middle of a bustling city center, one can stroll through ancient ruins.

DAY 4: DAY TRIP TO PUEBLA OR PYRAMIDS OF TEOTIHUACAN

DAY TRIP TO PUEBLA

If you’re comfortable with driving in big cities, I highly recommend renting a car and taking a day trip to the colonial town of Puebla, just two hours outside of Mexico City.
Once you get past the city traffic, it’s pure bliss on the scenic highway with volcano views. I rented a car from Avis in Polanco and was extremely pleased with the vehicle and service I received.

Puebla, which has UNESCO World Heritage status, is known for its colorful facades, ornate churches, and cobblestone streets. Dine at Casareyna, which serves signature Pueblan dishes, such as mole poblano, offering a unique and refined interpretation of classic recipes. There’s enough to see in Puebla to make it an overnight stay if you choose to make it a two-day trip.

En route back to Mexico City, take a slight detour to Val Quirico, an enchanting village that evokes the charm of a European medieval town. Here, you can explore unique shops and indulge in a delightful dinner at one of the many restaurants. We picked La Route Des Vins Val Quirico, situated in the quaint town square, where we enjoyed our meal with live music overlooking the square.

Day Trip to the Pyramids of TeotihuacÁn

Although much about the civilization that built Teotihuacan remains a mystery, it continues to be one of the biggest attractions for both locals and tourists. Book a tour on Viator or a similar tour site to explore the Pyramids of Teotihuacán, known as the City of the Gods, about an hour from Mexico City. The Pyramid of the Sun, the largest pyramid at Teotihuacán, and Pyramid of the Moon, are the two main attractions. If you’re looking for an aerial view, there’s no better way than to try the sunrise hot air balloon ride (on my wish list for a future visit).

DAY 5: Polanco

Polanco is an upscale neighborhood in Mexico City known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and modern architecture.

breakfast at PASTELERÍA MAQUE
@MAQUECAFE

Maque has a picturesque setting, offering open-air charm with its outdoor patio and warm coziness inside. Whether you're seeking a quiet cup of coffee, a scrumptious pastry, or savoring a full breakfast, Maque sets the perfect tone for the start of your day.

The National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología) is a captivating time-travel journey through Mexico's rich history and cultures. Whether you want to learn more about ancient civilizations or just curious about Mexico's story, this museum is a must-see on every visit to Mexico City.

BITES & BOOKS AT CAFEBRERÍA EL PÉNDULO
@cafebreriaelpendulo

Cafebrería El Péndulo is a haven for book lovers and coffee enthusiasts alike. This unique spot seamlessly blends the charm of a bookstore with the coziness of a café. We had lunch and drinks here before getting lost in their magnificent book collection.

DAY 6: CHAPULTEPEC

One of the things I admire most about Mexico City is its commitment to preserving green spaces. Chapultepec is one great example of that, an urban oasis where nature and culture intertwine.

VISIT CASTILLO DE CHAPULTEPEC and bosque de chapultepec
@museodehistoria @chapultepeccdmx

Castillo de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Castle) is a cultural beacon, offering visitors a tour through Mexico's rich history. The castle walls narrate the story of Mexico’s intricate past. As you make your way through the castle, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Park) and the city below.

Spend the rest of your day strolling through Chapultepec Park, one of the largest city parks in the world, at 1,695 acres.

DAY 7: JUARÉZ & CASA GILARDI

The last day is all about taking in those last minute pleasures before heading home and this line up really makes it special and stress-free.

SHOP AT UTILITARIO MEXICANO IN JUARÉZ
@utilitariomexicano

Utilitario Mexicano is a concept store of carefully curated everyday objects that blend functionality with contemporary design. The store's clean and modern aesthetic was so inviting I circled the store in its entirety numerous times. We left with several unique gifts to take back home. If you’re interested, take a look around their online shop here. Thank you to my friend Ramón, who’s from Mexico City, and suggested this place to me (and Juaréz in general).

VISIT CASA GILARDI
@CASA_GILARDI

Family-owned, Casa Gilardi was the last private home designed by renowned Mexican Architect Luis Barragán. You can read the full story of the home here. Gilardi House is exquisitely colorful yet serene, magestically built around a huge jacaranda tree. The most special part of the tour was hearing directly from one of Gilardi’s sons who greeted us during our reservation.

You can only visit Casa Gilardi by reservation by either filling out this form here or e-mailing casagilardi@gmail.com with your desired date(s) and time(s). Once you receive confirmation from them, you’ve been scheduled.

DINE AT MADErEROS
@madereros.mx

On the same block as Casa Gilardi, Madereros was an amazing find to stumble upon and the perfect ending to the day. Its colorful setting and beautifully plated dishes, along with the attentive staff, really made this a wonderful final goodbye sit-down meal in Mexico City.

In my two visits so far, Mexico City has really captured my heart. I hope my 7-day guide helps you experience some of the best of Mexico City, whether you’ve already been there or if it’s your first time. Safe travels, and enjoy every moment of your Mexico City adventure!
