New York City has so much to offer, especially if you’re willing to venture off the beaten path and discover some of its lesser-known gems. In this blog post, I’m sharing five ways to experience a different side of NYC that will amaze you, whether you’re a visitor or a local.

One can’t paint New York as it is, but rather as it is felt.

  1. Spend the Day (or Night) on Governors Island

Take the NYC Ferry from Manhattan or Brooklyn to Governors Island, a hidden oasis offering lush green spaces, historic sites, art installations, and stunning city skyline views. You can bike around the island, picnic in the park, attend one of their seasonal events, or dine at one of their many eateries for a unique day away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Check out Collective Retreats for special experiences and overnight accommodations.

2. Discover a piece of medieval Europe at The Met Cloisters

The Cloisters, part of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, specializes in European medieval art and architecture. Nestled in Fort Tryon Park, it offers a tranquil atmosphere where you can wander through stunning gardens, explore historic chapels, and marvel at ancient tapestries and manuscripts. The Met Cloisters is the perfect serene escape for art and history lovers.

3. Go on a FREE thursday NIGHT art gallery crawl in chelsea

Diverse people in a Chelsea, NY art gallery

Thursday night is Opening Night in Chelsea when many galleries (from West 19th to West 28th Streets between 10th and 11th Avenues) debut their new shows. Openings usually run from 6 pm to 8 pm and often include light refreshments. With its lively atmosphere and diverse exhibits, Chelsea Art Night is a must-do for art enthusiasts and anyone looking to soak up some of the city's vibrant cultural energy.

4. DELIGHT IN VEGAN DIM SUM IN CHINATOWN

Vegan dim sum is a delightful twist on a classic culinary tradition, and there’s no better place to try it than in Chinatown. Whether you're a long-time vegan or just curious, you can’t miss savoring plant-based dumplings, buns, and other bite-sized delights that burst with flavor and creativity. I was lucky to try this for the first time with friends at Bohdi, and we're counting down the days to going back!

Enjoy a memorable Sunday night of soulful Bossa Nova melodies and the warm ambiance of Zinc as Valtinho Anastácio’s Trio brings the rhythm of Brazil to NYC.  Valtinho’s smooth vocals, coupled with enchanting guitar and piano tunes, will transport you to the heart of Brazil.
