UPSTATE NEW YORK DAY TRIP IDEA #1: KAATERSKILL FALLS / TANNERSVILLE / HUNTER

About a two-and-a-half hour drive from Manhattan, up in the Catskill Mountains, you’ll find places filled with natural beauty and quaint appeal.

One of the natural wonders you can enjoy is Kaaterskill Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the state of New York at 260 feet. You can view them from above from the upper platform or hike 300 feet to the base to get an up-close feel.

Next, stop in Tannersville, NY which offers a vibrant arts scene with galleries, local crafts, and cultural events. One of my favorite places in Tannersville is the Deer Mountain Inn where you can stop in for a drink, a small bite, or a full three-course meal all while dreaming up a longer future stay.

End your day in Hunter, NY where you can take the Hunter Mountain Scenic Skyride for a relaxing ride with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. You can also drive along the Catskill Scenic Byway to enjoy the picturesque views and charming towns. The city of Beacon, NY is a perfect day trip idea for anyone looking to blend contemporary art with a charming small-town feel. Whether you drive or take the Metro-North Railroad from Grand Central Terminal, once in Beacon, you’ll find the city very walkable and accessible via the local shuttle.

Start by visiting Dia Beacon, a contemporary art museum housed in a former Nabisco factory. Its expansive galleries showcase a diverse collection of modern art, drawing art enthusiasts from around New York and the world.

Spend the rest of your day taking a leisurely stroll up Main Street, lined with eclectic boutiques, art galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, local breweries, and artisanal shops.

The village of Cold Spring, NY is easily reachable by train, making it an ideal destination for a quick and convenient getaway from New York City.

You can either start your day with one of the many nearby hikes or stroll down Main Street where you’ll find numerous antique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes.
