One Perfect Day in Hudson: A Dog-Friendly Haven in Upstate New York

Whether you’re looking to escape the daily hustle and bustle of the city or simply visiting New York, you can’t miss a day trip to Upstate, especially if you have a pup. But traveling with your dog, even for the day, can require a little planning. So, as a fellow dog owner, I’ve started collecting day trip ideas to Upstate, NY that include dog-friendly places and experiences everyone can enjoy.

In this blog post, I’m introducing you to the historic town of Hudson which lies on the banks of the Hudson River, about a two hour drive north of Manhattan. Hudson is a charming town filled with antique shops, art galleries, chic boutiques, cozy cafes, and trendy eateries. Outdoor lovers can also enjoy Hudson’s beautiful natural surroundings which offer opportunities for hiking, biking, and more. 

Whether you’re looking for an art fix, culinary delights, or simply fresh air, join me as I walk you through four of the best things I found you can do in Hudson, NY for the day with your dog by your side.



EXPLORE THE outdoor SCULPTURE & architecture PARK AT Art Omi

After a two hour car ride, you’ll want to stretch your legs (whether you have two or four). Start your day 15 minutes outside of Hudson, in Ghent, visiting Art Omi. It’s an arts center that spreads across 120 acres, with 60 works currently on view in the landscape. Art pieces are added or exchanged each year to make sure you have a unique visit. Art Omi relies on community support, so please consider donating ($15 per person is the suggested donation) and register in advance to ensure you have the best visit possible. Dog owners are required to register their pups onsite at the visitors center upon arrival and reminded to please keep them on leash throughout the visit.

WALK AROUND DOWNTOWN HUDSON

Stroll along Warren Street, the main street in Downtown Hudson, where you'll find a mix of shops, bookstores, cafes, farm-to-table restaurants, and more. Whether you're taking in the historic landmarks, the scenic Hudson River views, or simply soaking in the chill vibes, downtown Hudson is an enchanting little escape. A beautiful, dog-friendly, dining option in town is Feast & Floret.

STOP IN FOR A BITE AND A BREW AT UNION STREET BREWING CO.

Head to Union Street Brewing Co. where you can sit comfortably outside with your dog as you enjoy one of the many craft beers brewed on-site along with a tasty meal. If you’re lucky enough to snag one of the seating areas with a fireplace, you’re golden! This is a great spot whether you’re a beer expert or just looking to unwind.
